  This "village" is Zhongguancun.

  At the beginning of the founding of New China, it was a natural village in the suburbs of Beijing, with only farmhouses and vegetable fields. Zhongguancun is famous all over the world. It began in 1953 when the Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences moved in, and the scientific cause of New China was laid here. In the past 70 years, institutions of higher learning have taken root here, scientific research institutes have scattered branches and leaves here, and high-tech enterprises have been iteratively upgraded here. Zhongguancun has become the region with the densest scientific and technological resources, the strongest scientific and technological conditions and the richest scientific research achievements in China, which has played a leading role in implementing the innovation-driven development strategy throughout the country.

  Entering a new era, Zhongguancun, as the main carrier of building a national science and technology innovation center, is accelerating its March towards a globally influential science and technology innovation center.

  Patriotic dedication to earth-shattering cause

  "National Nanoscience Center", which stands in the north of Zhongguancun overpass in the North Fourth Ring Road, is a new force in China’s scientific and technological competitiveness. From 1950s to 1960s, seven winners of the "Two Bombs and One Satellite" Medal came out of this building: Qian Sanqiang, Wang Ganchang, Peng Huanwu, Deng Jiaxian, Yu Min, Zhu Guangya and Chen Fangyun. From 1955 to 1995, nearly 30 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences came out of this building, which "hatched" eight or nine new nuclear science research institutions and derived a huge group of research and development institutions.

  An old man told reporters that Qian Sanqiang’s office was on the first floor, Peng Huanwu, Deng Jiaxian and Yu Min’s theoretical rooms were on the third floor, and Wang Ganchang’s cosmic ray room was on the fifth floor. From 1950s to 1980s, a large number of famous scientists were concentrated in several simple gray brick buildings in this area. They are unknown, doing one thing after another, earth-shattering things in a down-to-earth manner, and becoming the founders of various disciplines of modern science in New China.

  "The greatest wish is to strengthen the country", which is almost the voice of a generation of scientists. With Zhongguancun as the fulcrum, they fought where the motherland needed them most. Patriotism, dedication, scientific spirit and climbing spirit are integrated with them and into the blood of "villagers", which has become the most precious spiritual inheritance of Zhongguancun.

  In every important exploration of reform and opening up, Zhongguancun’s figure is firm and dazzling.

  Scientists went into the sea, more than 40 years ago, which was unthinkable. In Zhongguancun, Chen Chunxian, a nuclear physicist at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, became the first person to eat crabs.

  A broken table, a few broken stools, seven or eight people, and a half warehouse of five or six square meters … … On October 23, 1980, Chen Chunxian, who came back from an investigation in Silicon Valley, hung the sign of "Advanced Technology Development Service Department of Beijing Plasma Society" in front of a warehouse in the family area of Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Here, knowledge can be exchanged for wealth, and there can be income besides salary slips.

  "If universities will always be ivory towers and research institutes will always be technical academies that don’t ask about the market, and they will never be in contact with factories, then the spring breeze of science will never be closed." The early perception of the information age inspired Chen Chunxian’s other "dream of strengthening the country", and Chen Chunxian stubbornly persisted on the road to breaking the ice.

  Times determine fate, and "scientific spring" brings the news of spring. In 1983, the central government made a final decision and the controversy vanished. Scientific and technological personnel went into the sea, and it has become a tide since then.

  By 1987, Zhongguancun’s "Electronic Street" had reached a considerable scale, with a daily flow of 200,000 people and 148 scientific and technological enterprises, with a total sales of more than 900 million yuan, accounting for 37% of Haidian District’s total social income.

  Coins always have two sides. In the early days of reform and opening up, Zhongguancun, which grew wildly, was accompanied by prosperity and chaos. There were illegal acts in the early market economy, and Zhongguancun was also the hardest hit. The voices of "banning", "banning" and "cleaning up" are rampant.

  Amid all the noise, a report points out the direction of the times.

  "The development of electronic street has impacted the old ideas, the old system that science and technology are out of touch with economy, explored the new way of combining science and technology with economy, explored the new way of starting and developing China’s high-tech industry, and provided new ideas for the reform of science and technology system, education system and economic system." On March 12, 1988, People’s Daily published a survey report on "Zhongguancun Electronic Street", which affirmed the practice of Zhongguancun.

  Breaking the containment and barriers, Zhongguancun is one step ahead. On May 10th of the same year, the State Council approved the establishment of China’s first national high-tech zone — — Beijing new technology industry development experimental zone.   In 2012, Wang Xiaodong returned to China and became a recruit in Zhongguancun. Beijing Institute of Life Sciences and Baekje Shenzhou Biotechnology Co., Ltd., led by him, vowed to develop the best anticancer drugs for mankind.   In 2016, the fully humanized monoclonal antibody BGB— A317 has become a biological candidate drug approved for clinical trials in the United States.

  The figures prove it: In 2018, enterprises in Zhongguancun Demonstration Zone applied for 86,395 patents, up 17.0% year-on-year, and obtained 53,982 patents, up 24.4% year-on-year, with 98,624 valid invention patents. Enterprises with more than 100 patent applications accounted for nearly 50% of the applications in the demonstration area, and enterprises in the demonstration area applied for 4,596 PCT patents, accounting for 70.4% of the PCT patent applications in Beijing during the same period.
